Two open-source ERPs, two business models
Sound familiar?
Your business has outgrown spreadsheets and its accounting package. SAP and Oracle feel too big and too expensive, and every search for an alternative ends with the same two names: ERPNext and Odoo.
ERPNext and Odoo both cover accounting, inventory, sales, purchasing, manufacturing, HR and more, and both have open-source roots. The big difference is how they make money. ERPNext is fully open source under GPL-3.0 with no user fees; you pay for hosting and services. Odoo sells subscriptions per user per month for its Enterprise features, with a limited open-source Community edition.
Latest versions
ERPNext v16 arrived after almost two years of development. Frappe highlights custom financial reports, purchase expense booking, automatic closing stock posting, consolidated trial balances across companies, material requirements planning (MRP), inward subcontracting, serial and batch traceability, and stock reservation for work orders.
Odoo 19, released in September 2025, added AI agents that learn from your documents and take actions, natural-language search, faster cached views, and new localisations for more than 40 countries.
